Inspired by Riverside’s Architectural Heritage
Commissioned by Innovative Housing Opportunities (IHO), a California nonprofit affordable housing developer dedicated to creating high-quality housing communities that strengthen lives and neighborhoods, the Aspire Apartments mural transforms a newly constructed residential community into a visual celebration of Riverside’s architectural character. Conceived as part of a permanent supportive housing community for transition-age youth, the project demonstrates how public art can create a welcoming sense of place while strengthening a neighborhood’s identity.
Rather than introducing an unrelated image, the mural draws inspiration from one of Riverside’s most recognizable design traditions, creating an architectural statement that feels both contemporary and deeply connected to the city’s history.

The Story
The design reinterprets the decorative Spanish ceramic tiles found throughout Riverside’s historic Mission Revival architecture, enlarging these familiar patterns into a monumental mural that spans the exterior of the building. By transforming a traditionally small architectural detail into a large-scale public artwork, the mural creates a bold visual identity while remaining respectful of the surrounding neighborhood.
The composition demonstrates how architectural graphics can become an extension of a building rather than simply decoration applied to its surface. Inspired by the colors, craftsmanship, and geometric patterns that have defined Riverside’s built environment for generations, the mural establishes a timeless visual language that complements both the architecture of Aspire Apartments and the city’s historic character.
Despite a narrow work area and continuous pedestrian activity, the project was carefully planned to maintain safe and unobstructed access throughout construction. The completed mural demonstrates how thoughtful design and efficient execution can enhance a new residential development without disrupting the daily experience of the surrounding community.
Community Impact
Since its completion, the mural has become a recognizable feature of Aspire Apartments and has helped introduce the development as a positive addition to the neighborhood. Rather than standing apart from its surroundings, the artwork reinforces Riverside’s architectural identity while giving residents and visitors an immediate sense of place.
