Where Arts and Athletics Come Together

Commissioned by the Jurupa Valley Unified School District, this two-sided mural was created as a permanent visual companion to the newly constructed Elliott N. Duchon Concert Hall at Rubidoux High School. Designed to celebrate both the performing arts and athletics, the project transforms a simple concrete wall into a landmark that reflects the talent, creativity, and school spirit found throughout the campus. Positioned between the concert hall and the school’s athletic facilities, the mural was conceived as an extension of the architecture itself—creating a seamless visual experience that welcomes students, families, and visitors from every direction.

The Story

Rather than creating a single mural, the project was designed as two complementary experiences connected by one continuous visual language.

The side facing the Elliott N. Duchon Concert Hall celebrates music through portraits of student performers and a bold composition of oversized piano keys that stretches across the length of the wall. Choir, trumpet, violin, and percussion students represent the many artistic disciplines nurtured within the concert hall, while the colorful geometric background brings movement, rhythm, and energy to the composition.

The opposite side recognizes Rubidoux High School’s athletic programs through baseball, football, soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, and track. Each athlete was carefully positioned to create movement across the wall while maintaining clear visibility from the surrounding walkways and gathering spaces.

One of the defining design goals was to integrate the mural directly into the architecture of the new building. The green and gold palette intentionally mirrors the colors incorporated throughout the concert hall’s exterior, allowing the artwork to feel like a natural extension of the facility rather than a separate decorative element.

The project also required multiple painting techniques—including acrylic brushwork, rollers, masking systems, and spray paint—to achieve crisp geometric forms alongside highly rendered portraits. The result is a mural that balances technical precision with vibrant visual impact.

Community Impact

Since its completion, the mural has become a recognizable landmark at Rubidoux High School. Students pass the artwork every day, while families attending concerts, athletic competitions, graduations, and other campus events frequently use it as a backdrop for photographs celebrating important milestones.

More importantly, the project reinforces the idea that artistic achievement and athletic excellence deserve equal celebration. By connecting the visual identity of the concert hall with the surrounding campus, the mural strengthens school pride while creating a welcoming environment that reflects the creativity, dedication, and diversity of the Rubidoux High School community.
